 | | Purine bases, nucleosides and nucleotides released as by-products of cellular metabolism or from the catabolism of nucleic acids can be recycled via the salvage pathway. Guanosine is an intermediate of catabolism of guanine nucleotides. It can be recycled to guanine nucleotides either directly by guanosine kinase, or via guanine by consequent conversions mediated by guanosine nucleosidase and guanine phosphoribosyltransferase. Guanosine may also be converted to xanthosine, which can be used by some plants in theobromine or caffeine biosynthesis [ Ashihara97 ] . Alternatively, guanosine can be catabolized in the conventional purine degradation pathway via xanthine. In contrast to bacteria which can convert GMP to IMP by GMP reductase, this enzyme activity is not detected in plants [ Ashihara97 ] . Adenosine can be recycled to adenine nucleotides in similar ways as guanosine. In contrast to animals which primarily recycle adenosine to inosine by adenosine deaminase, most plants do not salvage adenosine via this route since adenosine deaminase is not present in most plants [ Moffatt02 ] . Alternatively, adenine nucleotides are degraded by firstly converting AMP to IMP, catalyzed by AMP deaminase. IMP is further converted to xanthine by alternative routes. Xanthine then enters the conventional purine degradation pathway. - aracyc This pathway occurs in cytosol. References: - siva
